Jetpack Jones: Torso and Arms

Image
Started adding on arms and improving the neck on the model and so far I feel this is still going well, although I am starting to have some problems with triangles along the neck and bottom section of the torso which is making it difficult for me to add geometry and shape sections of the body well, so Im going to get the model looked at and see if I can get these problems sorted, but overall I feel this is going well and I am confident to move onto the legs.

Jetpack Jones: Starting the Torso

Image
Started on the torso and already I'm feeling a lot more confident abut this then I was about the head and although its still early days at this point I feel that this is already starting to come together quiet nicely, I just need to make sure im up to date with clean up.

Character Design: Astronaut Character Design

Image
Continued on with my characters I finally decided to try and emphasis the heigh and size difference of the two astronauts, looking at the personalities of the characters and then trying to transfer it onto their body type. For the American Astronaut I decided to make him mores stocky and short to show that he's strong and more sprightly then the cosmonaut, but also not as smart and practical, by making his arms and shoulders bigger and giving him a smaller head. Meanwhile I decided to make the Cosmonaut more lanky, keeping his slender frame and making his legs a bit longer while also increasing his head size and making it more oval than the astronaut's so they are easier to tell apart. Overall I am happy with them, although I still think I need to work on the outfits better and maybe could push their designs a bit further.

Character Design: Storyboards

Image
This lesson we looked at storyboards and how they are played out for future reference. For the first one I looked at a scene from a film and laid it out in storyboard format understand it better, so for mine I looked at the Leap of Faith scene from Spiderman Into the Spider-verse and from what I made I feel that I learned a little more about scene layout and how much information I need to put in a scene in order for it to work and tell the bones of the story that I would want to tell and it was nice to see if through some already accomplished work and I feel has allowed me to understand better how to use storyboards properly. We also had to transfer those skills into a storyboard to tell a chase scene and I feel I did an okay job, although I did struggle in the beginning to figure out how to show the tension on the page.

Life Drawing

Image
I decided to try my hand at drawing on a bigger piece of paper rather than using my sketchbook to see where I'm struggling and also to put myself out of my comfort zone. Overall I think I did pretty well, although because I kept moving the board so I could draw the pose better the body did turn out a bit wonky and I had trouble drawing the arms well, so thats something I know I struggle with and that I can try and improve if I decide to draw on a big canvas again.

Lighting and Rendering: Displacement (Mushroom)

Image
Because I struggled with the Dinosaur head I managed to finish this first because of how easy it was. Again I struggled with this, but not as much as the dinosaur head and after some practice on my own trying to do the process from memory I feel more comfortable doing this on my own.

Lighting and Rendring: Displacement (Dinosaur)

Image
Finished transferring the dinosaur head from Mudbox into Maya and applying the displacement to it. I did find this one very difficult, mostly because I'm still not used to using Mudbox and I had trouble getting and finding the correct files because they wouldn't appear properly on the computer, but after a few test tries I think I have gotten the hang of it and might use this in the future on bigger projects if I need to.

Character Design: More Astronauts and Captain Good Boy!

Image
Continuing on with the Astronauts and the companion we had to add on from the last lesson, I decided to continue looking at different breeds that might fit with the American astronaut and his body type to be used as shorthand for the audience when seeing them together. I decided to go with, at this point a chubby Dachshund, because I felt the size and weight of the dog matched the American Astronaut well enough, along with the matching uniforms as well. I will continue to look at other dog breeds that might be a good match for the Astronaut, but at this point I am happy with where this is going but feel I need to pay more attention to facial expressions for the astronauts and making their body features more dynamic and different, along with the robot.
